Tech Interview Prep: What European Companies Actually Test

Most candidates assume interviews measure competence. In most European companies, they measure exposure — exposure to risk, exposure to cost, exposure to unpredictability. After eighteen years in IT — twelve inside Tier-1 manufacturing IT and six in digital agencies — I stopped treating interviews as talent discovery. They are risk compression exercises. The question behind most evaluation forms is simple: what level of delivery variance does this person introduce into the system?

This applies to most hiring environments: SaaS platforms, fintech, enterprise IT, digital agencies. Highly specialised R&D roles or deep security research may still test primarily for raw technical depth. But those represent a minority of European hiring volume, and if you’re reading this you’re probably not interviewing for a compiler research position at a national lab.

The Economics Behind the Interview

Since 2022, hiring across much of Europe has become structurally more conservative. Budget scrutiny increased. Headcount approvals slowed. In several German enterprise environments in 2023–2024, even mid-level roles required finance validation. When hiring becomes financially constrained, interviews change. Evaluation sheets increasingly include language around execution reliability, scope discipline, maintainability awareness, and stakeholder alignment. Predictability is easier to evaluate than brilliance. And in constrained environments, predictability is valued more highly.

What Companies Say They Test vs What They Actually Test

There’s a consistent gap between the stated focus and the observed signal. System design ability is listed on the rubric; what gets evaluated is trade-off reasoning under constraint. Coding quality is stated; what actually matters is stability during correction — whether you become defensive when your approach is challenged. Culture fit is a category on every form; what it measures in practice is communication cost in cross-border teams. Ownership is a stated criterion; what interviewers are actually trying to assess is whether the candidate has a history of surviving failure without externalising it.

System Design: Adjustment Under Constraint

In enterprise IT environments — especially in Germany and parts of Benelux — architecture rarely starts from scratch. It is layered on legacy systems, compliance frameworks, and fixed release cycles. During system design interviews, constraints are introduced deliberately: limited DevOps capacity, legacy integration dependencies, regulatory audit requirements, fixed quarterly release windows. The evaluation rarely centres on naming patterns correctly. It centres on whether the candidate adjusts when constraints appear mid-conversation, or continues arguing for the theoretically optimal solution that the environment cannot support.

Algorithm Rounds: Baseline, Not Differentiator

Outside US-influenced scale-ups and FAANG-style companies, algorithm tasks in Europe function primarily as threshold filters. They test structured thinking under mild pressure. Evaluation notes in the environments I’ve observed frequently focus on clarity of reasoning, ability to ask clarifying questions before diving in, composure during correction, and collaboration tone. The solution itself matters less than whether the candidate can think out loud in a way that’s useful to the people watching.

Communication as Integration Cost

Most European technology companies operate in multilingual environments. English is frequently the working language but rarely the native one. Interviewers implicitly evaluate future coordination cost — how much effort will it take to work alongside this person? Long, abstract explanations increase perceived friction. Defensive reactions increase perceived volatility. This is not about being personable; it’s about the recognisable signal that communicating with you won’t be an additional tax on the team’s capacity.

Preparation as Practice, Not Memorisation

Preparation in this context is not about drilling algorithm solutions until they’re automatic. It’s about practising the kind of reasoning these interviews are built to observe — explaining trade-offs plainly, adjusting when a constraint changes the problem, flagging what you don’t know rather than papering over it. Interviews compress months of collaboration into a few structured conversations. What you’re trying to demonstrate is not that you have every answer, but that the process of working with you produces reliable outputs. In most European hiring environments right now, that’s the dominant signal being evaluated. Not brilliance. Containment.
